The World Championships in Doha were a true endurance test for the German track and field athletes for Tokyo 2020. 28 of 68 marathon runners did not make it to the finish line. Blistering heat in summer and in hot countries is not only unpleasant, but also limits athletic performance. According to Prof. Winfried Joch from the Institute of Sports Science at the University of Münster, energy consumption in sports can exceed 90% just for heat regulation.
